BestCities

A customised WordPress website for an international global alliance

The Project

BestCities is the digital home of a global alliance, bringing together detailed information about member cities, initiatives, resources and events for an international audience. The website needed to handle large volumes of structured content while remaining clear, engaging and easy to navigate.

This project involved rebuilding a complex existing site using custom fields and flexible templates, allowing staff to confidently populate pages dense with graphics, data and editorial content. We designed layouts that could accommodate rich information without feeling cluttered, giving content room to breathe while staying visually engaging.

A key challenge was balancing continuity with progress. Some sections needed to closely reflect established designs that users were familiar with, while other areas were refreshed with a more contemporary, eye-catching look. We carefully matched legacy elements where required, while modernising typography, spacing and layout patterns elsewhere to lift the overall experience.

The site includes multiple custom post types and a bespoke events system tailored to the organisation’s needs. Despite the technical complexity under the hood, the backend was built to be intuitive, enabling staff to update content, add new cities, manage events and publish resources without technical support. The result is a powerful yet practical platform that supports a global organisation’s communications now and into the future.
